Overview
Black marlin are identified by pectoral fins that cannot fold flat against the body, a shorter and lower dorsal fin than a blue marlin and a deep, heavy shoulder. The back is slate blue to black over a silver belly, and large fish often appear bronze or silver when lit up. They live in tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific waters from East Africa to Central America, with a few strays rounding the Cape into the Atlantic. Females dwarf males and account for every fish over about 300 lb; a 'grander' over 1,000 lb is the goal of every serious crew.
Unlike blues, black marlin spend much of their time close to reefs and continental shelf edges, where they ambush tuna, scad, mackerel and squid. The most famous fishery is the spring spawning aggregation off Cairns and Lizard Island on Australia's Great Barrier Reef, where heavy tackle and skip-baited scad have produced hundreds of granders. Cabo Blanco, Peru, set the all-tackle record in 1953 and Panama, Costa Rica, Mauritius and Kenya all offer serious shots. The fight is short-range, violent and often ends in a tail-walking display that no other fish matches.
Where & when
Great Barrier Reef heavy-tackle season runs September–December as fish gather to spawn; Panama and Costa Rica peak December–March, and Kona, Hawaii sees blacks in summer.

Regulations
In US waters, billfish are federally managed and recreational anglers need an HMS angling permit; harvest is tightly restricted and sale is prohibited. Australia and most Pacific nations also impose size or release rules, so check local law before bringing a fish to the boat.
Records
IGFA all-tackle world record: 1,560 lb (707.61 kg) — Cabo Blanco, Peru, 1953 (Alfred C. Glassell Jr.). State and regional records are kept by each fish & wildlife agency.
Frequently asked
How do you tell a black marlin from a blue marlin?
Grab the pectoral fin: on a black marlin it is rigid and will not fold flat against the body, while a blue's folds easily. Blacks also have a lower, more rounded dorsal fin and a heavier shoulder. Color is unreliable since both change shades when excited.
Where is the best place to catch a 1,000 lb black marlin?
The outer Great Barrier Reef between Cairns and Lizard Island from September through December is the only place where granders are caught every season. Fish stage along the reef edge to spawn and crews skip-bait scad and small tuna on 130 lb tackle. Book a year or more ahead with an established game boat.
