Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information OnBite ("we", "us") collects when you use this website, and what we do with it. If you have questions, contact us at hello@onbite.fish.

Information we collect

  • Location. If you use the "Use my location" feature, your browser shares your coordinates with the page to produce a local forecast. We use it to fetch weather for that point. We do not store your location unless you choose to post a catch.
  • Catch reports. If you post a catch on our map, we store what you submit — species, the coordinates you selected, and any optional size, spot name, display name and note. This is published publicly on the map. Do not submit anything you don't want made public, and do not submit other people's personal information.
  • Usage data. Like most websites, our host and analytics may record standard technical information such as IP address, browser type, pages visited and referring site.

Third-party services

We rely on these providers, each with their own privacy policies:

  • Open-Meteo — weather and marine data. Your coordinates are sent to their API to return a forecast.
  • OpenFreeMap / OpenStreetMap — map tiles for the catch map.
  • Supabase — the database that stores published catch reports.
  • Netlify (or our hosting provider) — serves the website.
  • Google AdSense and other advertising partners — may serve ads and use cookies to personalise them.
  • Amazon Associates and other affiliate programs — may use cookies to attribute purchases.

Cookies and advertising

We and our partners may use cookies and similar technologies to run the site, measure traffic and serve advertising. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this or other websites. You can opt out of personalised advertising through Google Ads Settings, or opt out of third-party vendor cookies at aboutads.info.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under GDPR in the EU/UK, or CCPA in California), you may have the right to access, correct, delete or restrict use of your personal information, and to object to processing. To request removal of a catch report you posted, or any other data, contact us at the address above and we will action it.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.

We may update this policy from time to time. The "last updated" date above reflects the current version.
