Overview

Gag grouper are gray to brownish gray with a kiss-like pattern of darker worm-shaped blotches on the sides, a squared tail with a thin white edge and, on large males, a dark charcoal belly. They are often confused with black grouper, which have rectangular dark blotches and bronze-edged fins. Gag range from North Carolina through Florida and the Gulf of Mexico to the Yucatán, with juveniles in seagrass estuaries and adults on hard bottom from 30 to 300 feet. Red grouper, the other staple of the same fishery, are rusty-brown with pale blotches and a straight-edged dorsal fin and live on the same ledges.

Gag are ambush predators that hold tight to ledges, rock piles, wrecks and springs and rush out to grab pinfish, grunts, squid and crabs before diving back into the hole. In the fall and winter, big gag move onto shallow nearshore rock in 10–40 feet along Florida's Big Bend and Nature Coast, where anglers troll plugs over the bottom. The first few seconds of the fight decide everything: the fish must be turned before it reaches the rocks. Managed under strict quotas, gag have short recreational seasons that anglers watch closely.

Gag move onto shallow Gulf rock in fall and winter and sit on deeper ledges in summer; the recreational season is set by NOAA and the states and in recent years has been limited to a few summer and fall months in the Gulf, with Atlantic seasons running roughly May–December.

How to catch

Live-baiting ledgesAnchor up-current of a ledge or wreck and drop a live pinfish, grunt or sardine on a 6/0–8/0 circle hook with a 6–12 oz slip sinker and a 60–100 lb leader. Keep the bait a foot off bottom and lock the drag; when a gag hits, reel immediately and lift to pull it away from the structure.
Trolling deep-diving plugsOn shallow Gulf rock in fall and winter, troll large lipped diving plugs at 4–6 knots so they bounce along the bottom in 12–35 feet. Gag crush the plug and hook themselves; use 50–80 lb braid and keep the boat moving to drag the fish off the rock.
Dead bait and jigsFish a whole squid, sardine or a chunk of bonito on a knocker rig, or drop a 4–8 oz bucktail or slow-pitch jig to the ledge and work it slowly. Jigs often pull the biggest gag out of a spot that has stopped biting on bait.

Regulations

A saltwater license is required, plus a free reef-fish angler designation in Florida and federal rules in the Gulf and Atlantic. Gag have a minimum size, an aggregate grouper bag limit and short, changing open seasons set by NOAA and the states, and descending devices or venting tools are required aboard; always check the current season before fishing.

Records

IGFA all-tackle world record: 80 lb 6 oz (36.46 kg) — Destin, Florida, 1993 (Bill Smith). State and regional records are kept by each fish & wildlife agency.

Frequently asked

How do you tell a gag grouper from a black grouper?

Gag have gray bodies with worm-like or kiss-mark blotches, a squared tail with a thin white margin and dark gray or black fin edges; black grouper have rectangular, boxy dark blotches, bronze or orange edges on the pectoral fins and grow much larger. A charcoal-black belly marks a big male gag.

When is gag grouper season open?

It changes every year. In the Gulf of Mexico the recreational season has been shortened to a window of a few months in late summer and fall, while the Atlantic season generally runs from May through December with a winter spawning closure. Check NOAA Fisheries and your state agency right before you go, since seasons can close early when the quota is met.
