Overview

Common carp are heavy-bodied, bronze-gold fish with large scales, two pairs of barbels on a down-turned mouth and a long dorsal fin with a serrated spine. Mirror carp, with scattered oversized scales, and nearly scaleless leather carp are the same species. Native to the rivers of eastern Europe and Asia, carp were spread by the Romans and medieval monasteries, and the US government stocked them nationwide in the 1880s. They now live in every state but Alaska and thrive in warm, slow, nutrient-rich water from city park ponds to the Great Lakes.

Carp are omnivores that root the bottom for insect larvae, crustaceans, mollusks, seeds and plant matter, and a feeding fish gives itself away with mud clouds and bubbles. They grow fast, live for decades and reach 30–50 lb in rich waters. European-style carp fishing with hair rigs, boilies and bite alarms has a growing American following, and fly anglers sight-fish them on flats like bonefish. Their size, wariness and strength have earned them a reputation as the smartest fish in freshwater.

Carp feed hardest from spring pre-spawn through early summer and again in fall as water sits between 60 and 75 °F (16–24 °C); southern waters fish year-round while northern carp slow sharply below 45 °F (7 °C).

How to catch

Hair-rigged boilies or cornThread a boilie, tiger nut or a few kernels of corn onto a hair rig so the bait hangs just below a sharp size 6–8 hook, and fish it on a semi-fixed lead over a bed of chummed particles. The carp sucks in the bait, spits the hook and pricks itself; a bite alarm or tight line shows the run.
Pack bait and method feederMold a ball of groundbait, oats and sweet corn around a method feeder or directly around the lead with the hook bait buried in it. As it dissolves, carp feed in the pile and find the hook bait; cast to the same spot repeatedly to build the swim.
Sight-fishing with a fly rodWalk flats and shorelines on sunny days looking for mudding or cruising fish, then drop a small crayfish, nymph or berry pattern a foot ahead of a feeding carp and let it sink. Watch for the fish to tilt and flare its gills, then strip-set.
Free-lining breadIn clear ponds and canals, carp cruise the surface in summer and take a pinch of bread crust floated on an unweighted hook. Flick a few free offerings first, then cast the hook bait among them and hold still until a fish engulfs it.

Regulations

A freshwater fishing license is required. Carp are classified as non-game or invasive in most US states with no size or bag limits, though some waters restrict chumming or bowfishing, and a few states require that you not release carp back into certain waters.

Records

IGFA all-tackle world record: 75 lb 11 oz (34.35 kg) — Lac de Saint-Cassien, France, 1987 (Leo van der Gugten). State and regional records are kept by each fish & wildlife agency.

Frequently asked

What is the best bait for carp?

Sweet corn is the most reliable bait anywhere in the world: cheap, bright, sweet and the right size. Boilies in fishmeal or fruit flavors sort out bigger fish and resist nuisance species, and plain bread works in ponds where carp see a lot of people. Chum lightly with the same bait to build confidence.

Why are carp considered hard to catch?

They have excellent senses of taste, smell and hearing, feed cautiously, and learn to avoid line and hooks in heavily fished waters. Carp also feed by sucking and blowing food in and out, so a conventional baited hook is often rejected before you feel it. Hair rigs and patient chumming exist to defeat exactly that behavior.
